Math Story By Design

March 4, 2020 -- Following up on her lesson from this fall, North Adams Public Schools educator Melissa Quirk Cairns (math, middle school) asked students to revisit their “Where I’m From (Mathematically!)” poems they wrote in at the beginning of the year and to select important elements: what was still true about their relationship with math, what had changed, and then to brainstorm new ideas about math using the five senses. Using the visual artmaking principles called Elements of Design, the students created a visualization of their hopes in math for the future: their math stories by design. Their finished works hang on the wall at Drury High School.
