September 26, 2019 -- BRAINworks educator Melissa led her students in a lesson that deeply explored their own personal connections to math at the beginning of the school year. Using the format of “Where I’m From” poems, students adapted the ideas from the original poem to a math context and shared lines of these poems with their peers. After completing their individual poems, they met in small groups to merge lines and create group poems. Ultimately, each class integrated all groups’ poems to have a class poem reflecting how they feel about math in their everyday life in September. Melissa will revisit these poems in January, and again in May, to see if the class ideas around math have shifted.
